Great post (as usual). Thank you! The genre advice makes a lot of sense. Quick question: have you ever seen an orphaned book (the shelved one) come back years later and surprise everyone by selling?
Yes I have! Actually this happened to one of my authors recently and he wrote about it in his paperback acknowledgements (out in Dec) - The Missing Hour by Robert Rutherford.
Thank you, as ever, for this really helpful post, Phoebe, answering real-life concerns. I've known several authors who've experienced one or other of these issues.
"I have had a publisher approach me directly after reading an article I wrote online. Should I reach out to agents at this stage?" I'd ask the publisher to put me in touch with an agent. I'd beg the publisher to put me in touch with an agent. I'd lie down on the publisher's doorstep until they... Well you get the idea : )
Hey Phoebe you might like this one. I wrote to some of my biggest magazines about nudging an agent my way. The editors all said the same thing. If I knew any, send em my way(!) Who are these agents? Do they really exist? : )
Thank you Phoebe! I canβt tell you how helpful your newsletter is π
Iβm so glad! Thank you.
Thank you for these insights, so much useful information here ππ»

Iβm glad it resonated!
As always, love the candor! It is heartening to hear, especially about the inherited authors. Thank you for being so open about the business.
Thanks for reading!
Another fantastic post! Thanks so much, Phoebe! These really do shed light on concerns I hear from other new authors.
Thank you!
