Thank you for starting this substack! I've come over here from the article you put in the Bookseller, as I was attracted to the idea of more openness about what goes on in publishing behind the scenes. And this article was very useful. Thanks again!
Again, so helpful, Phoebe. I know a lot of authors don’t think it’s worth signing up for ALCS but they also collect and pay you PLR for translated works from other countries with whom the UK has a reciprocal agreement.
Thank you! This is very helpful and encouraging. There is so much out of our hands in publishing; focusing on what we can do is not only wise, but a key critical thinking technique I teach at work. I really appreciate you putting this together!
This was so helpful and informative. My first book is being published next year so I will take these tips on board and make sure I get the best out of the experience. Thank you! X
You give wonderful advice here! I would also add in terms of building your network - join the Society of Authors or the Writers' Guild or an equivalent if you can and get involved with your local group. Also, research your regional literature agency (mine is Writing West Midlands as I'm in Warwickshire) and look for ways to get involved.
Earlier in the week, I did my first ever cover reveal here on Notes. I wasn't sure if it'd work, but I did get some likes and restacks (thank you to everyone who liked/restacked!). With lots of writers being on here, though, I'm not going to be posting about the book every five minutes because it'll get very boring, very quickly! But I think other writers understand that we get excited by the cover reveal and publication day, so that's alright!
I did a "book now on NetGalley" Note, but I'm not sure if there's book bloggers on Substack. It'd be a fab platform, though, if they fancied it!
Great stuff! And an alarming number of authors don't know about ALC, but it's free money!

My pleasure!
Love all your posts SO much... And with this one, also check your contract says 'lead title' and then you know you'll get some marketing lol ;-)
Thank you for reading!

Such a helpful piece! It’s often hard to know how proactive to be and what things are within our gift to influence. Thank you!
Thanks for reading!
